Description
You may select the GTK+ look and feel which takes the configuration from the system where the application is running. If bigger fonts are used by the user, the status bar to have some fixed sizes and does not adapt to the new font sizes.
Test the behavior also with the Nimbus L&F (Java >= 1.6)

Some UI components updated so they adapt to the size of the internal components and fonts, like the status bar, the scale combo and the status progress bar.
Changes performed: gvsig-tools:r675 and r37848 .
